Phil Galfond Beats Top Field to Win Event 28 at World Series of Poker
Going into the final day of play, the storyline was all of the famous names and bracelet holders at the table. With the likes of Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, and David Benyamine the Milwaukee’s Best Light Lounge was packed with fans hoping to witness a piece of history. Some even hoped for a final table heads-up showndown between ten-time bracelet winner Johnny Chan and eleven-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. In the end, however, it was an online phenom somewhat overlooked in the hype, that was to take the bracelet in this $5,000 No Limit Hold’em event. Phil ‘OMGClayAiken’ Galfond had no problems leaving the mouse behind and stepping into the lights of a pro-packed final table to take home his first WSOP bracelet and $817,781.
Galfond was able to beat heads-up oppponent Adam Hourani despite Hourani’s seemingly unending ability to survive being all-in. Hourani was able to take home $493,748 for his runner-up finish. Other interesting notes from the tournament included a Day 1 table that included a total of 32 bracelets from eight different players. Those players included:
Also noteworthy was that the final table set a record for most bracelets at a final table with twenty eight. This eclipses the 2006 H.O.R.S.E. final table which had a total of twenty seven bracelets represented. Here is a list of the players with bracelets for this final table:
But it wasn’t to be for any of these players, as Phil Galfond outlasted them all to take down the bracelet, the dough, and is now a World Series of Poker Champion.
